Morgan Bay Cliffs: Everything you need to know
The Morgan Bay Cliffs are located along South Africa’s scenic Wild Coast, in the Eastern Cape Province. They are easily accessible within about an hours drive from the city of East London.
Rising to a towering height of 50 meters, the dramatic rugged cliffs stretch from Morgan Bay all the way to Double Mouth Nature Reserve. Carved over centuries by the relentless crashing of waves against the rock face, the cliffs are a mesmerizing sight. The cliffs not only provide incredible views but are also a great spot for photography. From peaceful sunset picnics to leisurely walks, long hikes, and adrenaline-pumping abseiling, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Activities at the Morgan Bay Cliffs
The rugged cliffs themselves are gorgeous and provide plenty of options when it comes to things to do! Rising up from the ocean, the views here are also really phenomenal. It’s no surprise, then, that the cliffs have become a popular destination for both locals and travelers.
Witness a Spectacular Sunset

The sunsets at the Morgan Bay cliffs are beautiful. Imagine an unobstructed ocean sunset view – it’s simply breathtaking! So, what’s the best way to enjoy the sunset here? I’d suggest bringing both your camera and picnic basket to catch the moment.

Useful Information for the Morgan Bay Cliffs
Location of the Morgan Bay Cliffs
To reach the Morgan Bay Cliffs, visitors can start from the parking lot outside the Mitford Hotel in Morgan Bay. Conversely, you can drive up the tarred road that leads to the top of the cliffs. However, for a more scenic experience, I recommend taking the walk up and over the grassy hill instead.
Provided here is a GOOGLE MAP DIRECTIONS link to the Mitford Hotel parking lot.
How long should you spend here?
The amount of time required to explore the Morgan Bay Cliffs can vary greatly depending on individual preferences, walking pace, and level of exploration. It’s important to consider factors such as how much time you wish to spend taking in the scenery and engaging in activities like photography.
If you enjoy a slower pace, savoring the surroundings, and capturing the beauty through your lens, you may find yourself lingering for extended periods. On the other hand, if you prefer a brisker pace, you may cover the trails more quickly or simply wonder the top at your own leisure.
If you will be hiking the cliffs, then consider allowing enough time to complete the trails as follows: The longer round-trip hike to Double Mouth, spanning approximately 11km, typically takes around 4-6 hours to complete. Shorter hikes will naturally require less time. However, even if you opt for a leisurely stroll to the cliffs to enjoy the view, it’s easy to lose track of time as the allure of the surroundings beckons you to stay longer than anticipated.
Considering all these factors, I highly recommend setting aside a full day to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the Morgan Bay Cliffs. By allowing ample time, you can embrace the spectacular scenery at a leisurely pace, engage in photography, and fully appreciate the awe-inspiring wonders that these cliffs have to offer.
