Where to find Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve

Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve is located in Franschhoek Valley, near the town of Franschhoek in the Western Cape province of South Africa. To get there, drive up the Franschhoek pass to the parking lot of Mont Rochelle.

Buying Permits

Just drop by the entrance gate any day from 9:00 to 17:00 to buy your tickets. Remember, they only accept debit cards, credit cards, Zapper, or Masterpass apps – no cash. If you get there before the staff, don’t stress! The gates stay open, and you can pay after your hike. If you prefer, you can also grab your tickets at the Franschhoek Information Bureau or purchase them online via Webtickets.

For a little extra cost, around $3 (R55), you can also pick up a guide trail book at the entrance gate.

The hiking trails at Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve

Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve has a variety of well-kept hiking trails. With different lengths and difficulty levels, you can opt for a leisurely walk or a more challenging hike. All the trails make a loop, beginning and finishing at the main gate.

Aalwynkop Trail – < 1km, circular
Manganese Trail – 1,5km
Breakfast Rock Trail – 1km one way
Winelands Trail – 1km one way
Vista Trail – 2,4km, circular
Uitkyk Trail – 6.8km, return
Upper Cat’s Path – 4km, one way
Perdekop Trail – 13.4km, circular
Du Toitskop Trail – 7.5km, return

No matter if you go for a short or long trail, though, the paths at Mont Rochelle offer amazing views.

During our visit, we did the short Vista Trail. With the trail guide map we purchased at the entrance gate, it was very easy to navigate the path. Even though the hike isn’t too hard, the summer sun can be intense, though. Remember to pack lots of sunscreen, wear a hat, and bring water.

A Rich Biodiversity of Plants and Animals

The Reserve is also part of the UNESCO-declared Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve. The diverse environment here has a bunch of cool plants and animals. So, when you’re hiking, you’ll see lots of interesting things, too!

Alongside the mountain fynbos plants, Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve is also home to many different kinds of birds. As of now, about 50 bird species have been seen in the reserve. Watch the sky closely, and you might catch a glimpse of buzzards, eagles, or kestrels soaring above. One special bird to look out for is the Cape sugarbird, one of only eight bird species found exclusively in the Fynbos biome. Another eye-catching bird is the malachite sunbird, known for its vibrant bright green feathers.
