Cape St Blaize Gin and Chocolate Pairing Delights
Hidden away in the charming town of Mossel Bay, along South Africa’s Garden Route, Cape St Blaize Gin Distillery is committed to crafting exceptional small-batch gins inspired by the regions’s natural beauty. With a focus on local botanicals and traditional distillation techniques, they’ve built a reputation for high quality and flavorful gin.
The building that houses the distillery is part of the Old Post Office Tree Square. Constructed in 1846 to serve as a warehouse and trading outpost by the wholesale company known as Barry & Nephews, it stands as one of the Southern Cape’s oldest recorded business premises. While the distillery is famous for the Gin Masterclass, what got my attention was the sign outside the door advertising a Gin and Chocolate tasting.
As we entered the building, however, we couldn’t resist sneaking a quick look at the Gin Making section inside. The ‘Gin Masterclass’ is an experience where visitors create their own bottle of Cape Saint Blaize Gin. You’re free to experiment with various flavour profiles, while simultaneous learning about the rich history of the region.
It’s not only about creating gin; Cape St Blaize also provides other options like Gin Liqueur Tasting and Gin paired with Sushi, in addition to various other tasting experiences for you to explore.
Just beyond the distillery doors lies a gorgeous indoor and outdoor restaurant called the The Cafรฉ Gannet restaurant. Renowned for its focus on fresh seafood, it’s a popular choice for those who appreciate ocean-to-table dining experiences.
Gin and Chocolate: A Perfect Pairing
Now, let’s talk about why we came hereโ the Gin and Chocolate Pairing. It happens at the Blue Oyster Cocktail Bar, in the same complex as the distillery. It’s a casual but classy place with a great view of the ocean and sunset.
Pairing gin with chocolate may seem unusual, but it’s a combination that works wonderfully! The gin is served on a table mat, providing in-depth notes and descriptions of the gin’s flavors and unique characteristics. The carefully selected chocolates pair expertly with various expressions of Cape St Blaize Gin. From the zesty and citrusy notes of their classic gin complemented by a dark chocolate Lindt to the floral and herbal undertones of their floristic gin that beautifully enhance a milk chocolate, each combination is wonderful!
As we sipped on our last gin and savored a final bite of chocolate, we knew we would return soon! In a nutshell, Cape St Blaize Gin Distillery is a fantastic spot to visit. Whether you decide to craft your own gin or treat yourself to a tasting, you’re sure to love it!
