The Edge Mountain Retreat: Unwinding in Nature

Tucked away in the picturesque village of Hogsback in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, lies the Edge Mountain Retreat. Surrounded by stunning mountain and valley views, the Edge has both accommodation and an on-site restaurant. You can either stay overnight or just visit for a few hours to explore the property – and that’s exactly what we did!

First, we headed for the restaurant. The restaurant is full of character with unique artwork, pictures, and vintage furniture. The smell of freshly baked cakes, scones, and bread hit us as soon as we walked in, and they all looked so tempting! The menu is extensive with some interesting options, including vegan choices.

I picked the homemade chickpea, spinach, and butternut pie with fries and salad, while my partner went for steak and chips. It was all delicious, especially the spinach and butternut pie. The homemade flaky crust made it a winner on the menu for me!

Right next to the restaurant, there’s this room with a fireplace, chairs, antique furnture and some intersesting light fixtures. I could easily picture myself there on a cold winter day, snuggled up with a good book. A gorgeous Great Dane was sprawled out on the sofa, seemingly in his usual spot.

Reflection at the Labyrinth

The labyrinth at the Edge Mountain Retreat

After our meal, we strolled over to the Labyrinth. This labyrinth at The Edge mirrors the design of the one in the Chartres Cathedral in France, boasting eleven circuits. It’s no small maze, with a diameter of 29 meters, a circumference of 91 meters, and a winding pathway that spans 700 meters from start to finish.

But what exactly is a labyrinth? It’s an intricate, maze-like path or design, usually featuring a single winding route leading to a central point. The idea behind a labyrinth is to traverse the path slowly and mindfully. This deliberate pace allows you to clear your thoughts, find inner peace, or perhaps gain some spiritual insight.

So, if you’re in the mood for a bit of contemplative practice, why not give it a try?

Spectacular Views at the Edge Mountain Retreat

The views of the mountains and valleys from the edge of the property are gorgeous! On the day of our visit, the sky was beautifully clear, allowing us to see far into the distance. Yet, there are times when the valley is enveloped in swirling mist and interesting cloud formations. I can envision how this creates a somewhat eerie atmosphere, perfectly in line with the enchanting character of Hogsback. Whether the day is misty or clear, one thing’s for sure – the views from The Edge are bound to leave you in awe.

To sum up, the Edge Mountain Retreat in Hogsback is a perfect blend of natural beauty, delicious food, and mindful experiences. From the charming restaurant to the cozy fireplace room, every aspect of The Edge tells a unique story. Whether you’re there for a quiet getaway or good food, it’s a beautiful gem in Hogsback.
